The Press-Enterprise: Metal Fans' Journey Leads To OZZFEST

July 6, 2003

Matt Surman of The Press-Enterprise reports in the paper's Sunday edition that the Ozzfest concert Saturday (July 5) at the Hyundai Pavilion at Glen Helen in Devore, California was attended by thousands of people representing various classifications of metal fans: the black-wearers, the muscled and tattooed, the shockers with dyed hair and piercings, the women in halter tops and short shorts, and the roaming crowds of teenage boys, looking to bang their heads just like Dad used to in Ozzy Osbourne's early days.

In the parking lot, a group under a tent hawked $1 Jack Daniel's shots. A parade of fans, with an occasional holler of "Ozzy" or an arm-aloft devil sign, took the long walk from the parking lots to the gates. There was even a touch of politics: People with clipboards found signers for a petition opposed to Gov. Davis' recall.

Right outside the gates, concertgoers were turned away for a variety of contraband: water bottles, blankets, studded collars. None of it was allowed in. Read more (free registration required).
